Abstract

Introduction: Aging requires urgent actions to put elderly rights protection at the center of public policy responses.

Objective: To assess the foundations for addressing ophthalmologic conditions of aging and their importance in the Cuban Nursing major.

Methods: A review of the literature was carried out between September 30, 2021 and May 30, 2023. A search was made in the databases SciELO, PubMed, Scopus, Redalyc and the Infomed repository of doctoral theses; as well as currently valid regulations for higher education. Articles in English and Spanish were examined. Thirty-three were selected that met the inclusion criteria, mainly from the last five years.

Results: They were organized according to currently valid programs and plans of study related to adult care for the training of nursing graduates in Cuba, ophthalmologic conditions in aging, and considerations on referents that support addressing these issues in the Bachelor's degree in Nursing.

Conclusions: The foundations for addressing ophthalmologic topics related to aging in the plans of study are considered. These are the link between the university and societal demands, the increase in population aging, and the high frequency of eye disorders in the elderly. Gaps are assessed that may lead to the formulation of strategies and methodological alternatives to improve the preparation of students.
