Management of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection by the Basic Health Team

Introduction: Professional improvement is aimed at achieving transformation of work in healthcare institutions. The human immunodeficiency virus infection is a disease with socio-health, economic and ethical impact.
Objective: To design a postgraduate course for improving the performance of the basic health team in the management of human immunodeficiency virus infection.
Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in Antonio Maceo and Abel Santamaría outpatient polyclinics, of Cerro municipality, between January 2020 and January 2023. The universe consisted of 121 physicians and 117 nurses from both areas. The selection of the sample was intentional, making it up of professionals with diagnosed cases of the infection: 113 among both areas. Surveys and performance observation were applied to physicians and nurses from the family medical offices.
Results: The learning needs of the members of the basic health team for the comprehensive management of the disease were identified, such as recognition and dispensarization of key population groups, follow-up of antiretroviral therapy schemes, insufficiencies in patient and family education about the disease and the benefits of treatment, and insufficient capacity to request help from the networks of people living with the human immunodeficiency virus. The proposed postgraduate course was designed upon these bases.
Conclusions: The designed postgraduate course contributed to the professional improvement of the members of the basic health team and will propitiate their better performance.
