Subjects of the D and E Plans of Studies for the Dental Medicine Major Related to Restorative Dentistry

Introduction: The differences between plans of studies invites to discover new perspectives and opportunities to strengthen the path towards an even more complete and enriching training.
Objective: To compare the subject syllabuses of the D and E plans of studies for the Dental Medicine major related to Reparative Dentistry.
Methods: A qualitative research was carried out. Official documents were used of the subject programs of the D and E plan of studies of the Dental Medicine major. The reference elements were justification, modality, weeks, hours, subjects, credits, relevance and links with the rest of the plan of studies, location in the syllabus and correspondence with previous and subsequent contents, objectives, teaching-learning strategy, contents, teaching aids, teaching methods, evaluation system and bibliography.
Results: The comparison highlighted similarities and differences in the subjects. There were changes in the titles, with similarities in Operatoria Clínica [Clinical Surgery] and Odontopediatría [Pediatric Dentistry]. Comprehensive Family Care showed improvements in relevance and links with the plan of studies, but weaknesses in bibliography. Endodontics presented strengths in student participation, but weaknesses in reduction of hours and literature updating. Pediatric dentistry had few transformations, as well as differences in hours and prevention activities. No syllabus included credits.
Conclusions: There were differences between the syllabuses of the current and previous plans that favored the teaching-learning process. Positive changes were identified regarding relevance and links with the plan of studies; however, some bibliography was obsolete. Weaknesses and strengths were detected in subjects, as well as in the reduction of hours.
