Abstract

Introduction: Cuban higher medical education advocates the training of highly qualified professionals, capable of considering, within their performance, the particularities of the cultures where they perform their professional activity. To this end, it is vital to achieve effective communication in English in a variety of intercultural contexts. English for specific purposes refers to the teaching and learning of English as a second or foreign language, in which the objective of the students is to use English in a specific field. Most professionals do not have the necessary development of language skills in this language, which would allow them to establish adequate communication with patients and family members.

Objective: To implement the manual for the improvement of the English language skills of health professionals.

Methods: A technological development research was carried out in the field of higher medical education at Facultad de Ciencias Médicas Enrique Cabrera, with 60 health professionals who were traveling to fulfill internationalist missions in English-speaking countries in the 2023-2028 academic years. The used theoretical methods were historical-logical, documentary analysis, systematization and systemic approach; while observation and surveys were used as empirical methods.

Results: The use of the manual for the improvement of the English language skills of health professionals allowed the improvement of their performance, by raising their level of knowledge of the English language, with a greater appropriation, systematization and integration of the contents and linguistic skills.

Conclusions: The manual presented here is an important tool for further English language training in the field of health professionals.
