Abstract

Introduction: Higher medical education aims to graduate health professionals with high level of knowledge, skills and abilities for the practice of their profession. The use of artificial intelligence technology can contribute to the preprofessional development of students.

Objective: To analyze the results of an educational intervention through the use of artificial intelligence to improve the educational performance of medical students.

Methods: An applied research, with a quasiexperimental design and of educational intervention, was conducted with seventh-semester medical students from of the Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo, Ecuador, in the subject of Internal Medicine II, Rheumatology-Hematology module. The universe consisted of 103 students, of which 82 made up the research sample. The variables general characteristics and academic performance were studied. The McNemar and chi-square tests were used to identify changes in the students' academic performance. The central axis of the educational intervention was the use of artificial intelligence technologies.

Results: The average age was 22.67 years, with a predominance of female students (64.62%). During the pretest, students with medium (41.46 %) and low (40.24 %) academic performance stood out; while, in the posttest, students with medium (47.56 %) and high (39.02 %) academic performance stood out.

Conclusions: The applied educational intervention improved the students' academic performance. The application of artificial intelligence allowed to revitalize the development of activities, as well as potentiate the acquisition of skills and abilities.
