Pedagogical Foundations of Clinical Reasoning in Nursing Education

Abstract

Introduction: Clinical reasoning represents an essential competency in nursing education due to its direct link to decision-making, quality of care, and safety in healthcare settings. In African contexts such as Angola, it is necessary to examine how this capacity develops under specific formative conditions marked by structural limitations and pedagogical challenges.

Objective: To analyze the pedagogical foundations that guide the development of clinical reasoning in fourth-year nursing students at the Instituto Superior Politécnico de Bié, Angola.

Methods: A qualitative, descriptive, and interpretative study was conducted during the academic period from September 2023 to April 2024. Participants included 79 fourth-year nursing students and 10 faculty members involved in clinical subjects. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were used. Thematic analysis was performed using Atlas.ti version 9, through open coding, axial categorization, and data triangulation.

Results: Findings revealed a weak connection between theoretical content and practical application, as well as deficiencies in teaching strategies that promote clinical judgment. Faculty members lacked specific pedagogical training, and active learning methodologies were not consistently applied. However, isolated innovative experiences emerged, which could be strengthened through a coherent institutional strategy.

Conclusions: The development of clinical reasoning in contexts like Angola requires curricular transformation focused on situated learning, reflective mentoring, and ongoing faculty development. The implementation of integrative pedagogical practices would help consolidate this competency from a critical and ethical perspective of care.
