Design and Theoretical-Methodological Foundation of a Teaching Strategy to Develop Communication Skills in Dentistry Students

Abstract

Introduction: Clinical communication is currently recognized as an essential professional competence in the training of health professionals; therefore, it is necessary to design teaching strategies that allow for the planned integration of communication skills into the teaching–learning process.

Objective: To provide a theoretical and methodological foundation for a teaching strategy aimed at developing communication skills in Dentistry students.

Methods: The qualitative phase of a mixed-methods study conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana between April and July 2025 is presented. The process for designing the strategy was organized into four phases. The empirical methods included documentary analysis, interviews, and focus groups. The theoretical methods comprised the historical-logical, analytical-synthetic, and inductive-deductive approaches.

Results: A teaching strategy was designed with three formative dimensions: cognitive, affective-motivational, and behavioral; one general objective and specific objectives; and structured into four stages: diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. A set of teaching actions was developed, including mirror classes, role-playing simulations, gamification, problem-based learning, and a course on communication in dental practice.

Conclusions: The teaching strategy demonstrates coherence, solid theoretical–methodological grounding, and responds to the formative needs identified in the Dentistry program. Its structure based on dimensions and stages, together with the integration of active methodologies, makes it a relevant alternative for the development of communication skills in the context of higher medical education.
