Clinical Simulation-Based Teaching for Nursing Educators

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Nursing education faces various barriers. Particularly in the development of clinical skills, the need to improve patient safety, the limited availability of clinical practice settings, and the increasing demand for healthcare services. These factors necessitate the design of new pedagogical practices adapted to these contexts.

Objective: Identify the central aspects reported in the available scientific evidence on clinical simulation-based teaching in nursing teachers.

Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The search was performed in the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO, including studies published between 2020 and 2025 in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The search terms used were “Simulation”, “healthcare”, “vocational training”, “education”, “nursing”, and “pedagogical”. 1,830 studies were identified. After applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, 18 were selected for qualitative analysis.

Results: The central aspects were organized into four thematic axes: pedagogical approaches to clinical simulation in nursing education; teaching competencies for simulation-based teaching; teaching and assessment strategies used by teachers in simulated environments; and educational contexts, types of simulation, and levels of teacher training. These areas document the presence of diverse pedagogical approaches, as well as the demands for specific competencies and various strategies in educational contexts.

Conclusions: Clinical simulation teaching in nursing is characterized by its active, mediated, and planned approach, employing instructional designs in safe environments, focusing on clinical reasoning and structured feedback, with the goal of integrating theory with real-world practice. Pedagogical training is essential in these educational contexts.
