A System of Indicators for Evaluating the Globalization of the University Curriculum

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: The globalization of the university curriculum requires indicators allowing for the systematic monitoring of the degree to which a global perspective is incorporated into policies, programs, and classroom practices.

Objective: To establish a system of indicators for evaluating curriculum globalization in higher education institutions.

Methods: A mixed-methods (qualitative-quantitative) research approach was employed to design a system of indicators based on accreditation models for higher education institutions, international rankings, and the experiences of various universities. The proposed system was validated using the Iadov technique with 14 expert-users from the Academic Research Network on Quality, which included participating universities from Ecuador, Colombia, and Cuba.

Results: The system of indicators was structured hierarchically, ranging from the institutional dimension down to its expression within the classroom, comprising three main categories: macro, meso, and micro-curriculum—and six tools that served to articulate strategic, operational, and formative actions. The Iadov technique yielded a Group Satisfaction Index of 0.64, thereby proving a positive assessment of the designed system of quantitative and qualitative indicators in terms of its clarity, relevance, and utility for decision-making and for formulating policies regarding curriculum internationalization in higher education.

Conclusions: The proposed system of indicators offers universities a comprehensive tool for planning, evaluating, and enhancing their guidelines and practices regarding curriculum internationalization. It contributes to fostering coherence among institutional strategy, academic management, and pedagogical practice.
