Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Professional development for optometry and optics graduates in ocular biometry facilitates their integration into professional practice, broadens their technical and clinical competencies, and strengthens their role within the multidisciplinary eye care team.

Objective: To design a professional development strategy to contribute to improving the performance of graduates in Optometry and Optics in ocular biometry at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology.

Methods: A study was conducted in the field of medical education among graduates in Optometry and Optics from December 2024 to July 2025. It consisted of two stages: 1) characterization of the level of knowledge, skills, and values of graduates in Optometry and Optics; and 2) design of the professional development strategy. The purposive sample consisted of 12 college graduates who gave their consent to participate in the study. Theoretical methods (analysis-synthesis, modeling, systemic-structural) and empirical methods (surveys, scientific observation, interviews, and consultation with specialists) were employed. The strategy was validated using the Delphi method with 10 experts.

Results: The improvement strategy was structured in four stages (diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation), with specific objectives and actions. The consultation with specialists yielded a consensus rating of “very adequate” for its relevance and applicability.

Conclusions: The implementation of the improvement strategy contributed to the enhancement of the performance of graduates in Optometry and Optics in ocular biometry at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology.
