Abstract

Introduction: Professional competencies grounded in new practices improve the quality of care for critically ill newborns in neonatal intensive care units.

Objective: To implement a strategy for developing competencies in the care of critically ill newborns aimed at improving neonatal morbidity outcomes.

Methods: A descriptive-qualitative developmental research study was conducted. It was structured in three stages: diagnosis, rationale and implementation, and evaluation. An observation guide was used, and a descriptive study of morbidity was carried out. Methodological triangulation was performed to compare the results of the variable “level of specific competencies in the care of critically ill newborns”. Thirty-four professionals from the neonatal intensive care unit of Antonio María Beguez César Hospital in Santiago de Cuba participated in the study from January to December 2025.

Results: The level of competency development achieved corresponded to a decrease in morbidity and deaths due to neonatal complications.

Conclusions: The implemented strategy contributed to solving the identified problem, and its actions raised the levels of competency development in the care of critically ill newborns, in accordance with social demands and the maternal and child health program policy.
