English for Specific Purposes, Continuous Training, and Health Fields: A Triad for Teacher Professionalization

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: The training of teachers to teach specialized English in medical settings is still insufficient, where effective communication can have critical implications for patient care.

Objective: To explain how the integration of English for specific purposes, continuous training, and health education improve teacher professionalization.

Author positioning: Continuous training equips teachers with pedagogical tools and updated medical knowledge, which make possible the creation of English programs for specific purposes that connect general linguistic competence with the specific demands of the sector. In addition, strategies based on authentic tasks, such as simulations and case analyses, are highlighted, which prepare students for real scenarios, while collaborations between educational institutions and health organizations improve learning outcomes by aligning content with practical needs.

Conclusions: The combination of English for specific purposes, continuing education, and health education constitutes an essential triad to promote effective communication in the medical field, by improving both the quality of teaching and the preparation of teachers and students to face the challenges of a globalized and culturally diverse environment.
