Bibliometric Analysis of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education between 2021 and 2026
Abstract
Introduction: Generative artificial intelligence burst into medical education and led to accelerated growth in publications on its integration into the training of health professionals. The structure of this scientific output in terms of volume, origin, journals and thematic trends remains unknown.
Objective: To analyze the scientific output on generative artificial intelligence in medical education indexed in Scopus between 2021 and 2026.
Methods: A descriptive bibliometric study was conducted. The universe comprised the documents indexed in Scopus that addressed generative artificial intelligence in medical education, retrieved through a search strategy applied to title, abstract and keywords. Productivity, impact and thematic trend indicators were analyzed with descriptive statistics and keyword co-occurrence analysis with routines developed in Python.
Results: The sample included 3 223 documents, with sustained growth since 2023 and 90,4 % published between 2024 and 2026. Original articles predominated (72,9 %). The United States (27,0 %) and China (12,7 %) led the output, with marginal Ibero-American participation. JMIR Medical Education headed the journal list. The documents accumulated 52 761 citations (average of 16,4) and the keyword network comprised 132 terms grouped into 4 thematic clusters.
Conclusions: The scientific output showed recent and accelerated growth, concentrated in a few countries and specialized journals, with a thematic shift toward the responsible use of these tools and research gaps in Latin America.
