Elective Course about Communication in Dental Practice for Undergraduate Dental Students

Abstract

Introduction: The development of courses focused on communication in dental practice not only benefits students in their academic training but also has a positive impact on the quality of care they will provide in the future.

Objective: To present the general overview of the elective course on communication in dental practice for undergraduate students in Dentistry.

Methods: Descriptive pedagogical research at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana from November 2024 to May 2025. The study consisted of two phases, research and design, which allowed for the development of a course corresponding to the optional/elective curriculum, aimed at undergraduate Dentistry students that addresses communication in dental practice.

Results: The elective course program includes: rationale, general and specific objectives, basic course contents with systems of knowledge and skills, fundamental values, methodological and organizational guidelines, and assessment system.

Conclusions: The elective course "Communication in Dental Practice" represents a necessary and evidence-based response to a recognized educational gap in dental education. Its program is based on proven pedagogical models in medical education and focuses on the specific communication needs of dental practice.
