Dental Students’ Perceptions about University Teaching in COVID-19 Times

Abstract

Introduction: COVID-19 caused the closure of universities worldwide. The Dental Medicine School at National Autonomous University of Honduras implemented distance education to continue the teaching-learning process.

Objective: To know the perceptions of dental students from the National Autonomous University of Honduras about the new teaching modality developed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: The study was of qualitative type with a descriptive exploratory design. Semistructured interviews were conducted with ten students, in order to find out their perceptions about the new teaching modality. The information was analyzed using line-by-line microanalysis.

Results: The students’ perceptions were analyzed in five categories: mechanisms used by the professors, competences in distance education versus face-to-face teaching, limitations of distance education, benefits of distance education, and return to face-to-face teaching.

Conclusions: Distance education is an alternative to continue with theoretical subjects. However, it does not allow the development of clinical skills because direct contact with patients is necessary.
