Abstract

Introduction: A thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary tool that organizes terms and concepts in a structured manner, usually in a hierarchical arrangement, to facilitate indexing, searching and retrieval of information from documents and databases. During the last decades, thesauruses have been fundamental pieces in the control of vocabulary in health sciences. These tools are essential for researchers, physicians and health professionals to access and use scientific literature effectively.

Objective: To characterize the main controlled language vocabularies in health sciences.

Methods: A literature review was conducted to analyze and characterize the main thesauruses in health sciences. Content analysis and classic documentary analysis were used to select relevant documents for the study of the analyzed subject.

Results: Medical Subject Headings is a controlled and hierarchically organized vocabulary used to index, catalog and search biomedical information. Descriptors in Health Sciences is a multilingual thesaurus developed from Medical Subject Headings. It serves as a tool for indexing scientific journal articles, books, conference proceedings, technical reports, and other types of materials. Elsevier Life Science Thesaurus is another life science thesaurus that also specializes in drugs, medical devices, and general health products.

Conclusions: The use of thesauruses in health sciences offers significant advantages for improving information retrieval, supporting standardization, and addressing challenges related to multilingual contexts. However, it is important to recognize the limitations and challenges associated with their usage.
