Abstract

Introduction: The academic credit system constitutes, for contemporary postgraduate education, a necessity in the continuing education of Cuban professionals. Its knowledge and application show insufficiencies.

Objective: To expose some of the aspects that give validity to this system, together with examples of its application in Cuba, particularly in the improvement and academic training of health professionals based on the current legislation in postgraduate education.

Authors' position: There is a lack of knowledge of the academic, legal, economic and social value of credit; therefore, its dissemination is necessary among professors, tutors, students and managers, which will facilitate better curricular designs and its academic management, the degree-related correspondence and its homologation.

Conclusions: The academic credit system for postgraduate education is applied in the continuing education of health professionals; however, it is not yet part of the culture of the academic community, and there is a lack of knowledge of its advantages and how to apply it in the curricular designs of postgraduate programs.
