Master's Program in Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology

Introduction: The evaluation of higher education programs contributes to raising the quality of postgraduate studies.
Objective: To evaluate the quality of the Masters Program in Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology.
Methods: Descriptive study of the first edition of the program, carried out at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology between January 2023 and July 2024. Quality was evaluated according to the Master's Degree Evaluation and Accreditation Subsystem (Resolution 11/19 of the Minister of Higher Education). The variables were: relevance and social impact, teaching staff, students, and infrastructure.
Results: Analysis of the program's objectives, lines of research, and academic tradition revealed high relevance and social impact. The teaching staff, with 51% holding doctorates in a specific specialty, was evaluated as a Qualified Program. Based on scientific publications, participation in events, and scientific and social recognition, it was evaluated as excellent. In relation to students, 74% graduated on schedule, which was evaluated as excellent. The solid infrastructure and teaching-learning resources, together with the management of the academic committee and the use of information and communication technologies, made it possible to achieve these objectives.
Conclusions: The first edition of the Masters program in Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology presents a quality standard that recognizes indicators of excellence. It is planned to increase the scientific achievement of the faculty and the blended learning modality in future editions.
