Historical Development of the Vertical Pediatric Internship in the Medical Major in Cuba

Introduction: The history of the internship is closely linked to the progress of medicine during all these times. The undergraduate internship, where students integrate and consolidate the acquired knowledge, is included in the E curriculum of the medical career.
Objective: To systematize the theoretical-methodological references that support the historical aspects of the undergraduate internship in the medical career in Latin America and Cuba.
Methods: A bibliographic review was made on the historical development of the internship in Latin American medical schools and in the vertical internship in Cuba, in the Virtual Health Library of Infomed, in the databases Scopus, SciELO, Redalyc, Latindex and Dialnet, in Spanish and English. The following descriptors were used for the search: undergraduate internship, internship/history and medical education. After applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, 41 bibliographies were selected for their topicality and scientific quality.
Results: Different researchers address how undergraduate internships have evolved over time in their countries. Through its historical evolution, it has been possible to observe that all curricula contemplate the undergraduate internship in medical training, although there are differences in terms of its duration, the rotations included and the modality, among other aspects.
Conclusions: The systematization carried out on the undergraduate internship allowed establishing an approach to the theoretical references that support the subject.
