Overview of Scientific Journals in Medical Education: Impact, Accessibility, and Editorial Trends

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Scientific production in medical education is crucial to transforming the training of health professionals, as it articulates research, innovation, and lifelong learning. In this context, scientific journals act as drivers of change towards a more critical, equitable medical education that is adapted to contemporary challenges.

Objective: To analyze the editorial quality, accessibility, and thematic trends of the main scientific journals in medical education.

Methods: A comparative and descriptive analysis was performed with bibliometric components of journals indexed in recognized databases (Scopus, WoS, PubMed), considering factors such as impact, H-Index, quartile, access model, and publication cost. Likewise, the predominant themes were explored using category maps, word clouds, and types of articles published in 2023-2024.

Results: A predominantly UK- and US-focused editorial distribution was identified. The journals Academic Medicine, Medical Education, and Medical Teacher lead in impact and citation. The central themes show a transition toward pedagogical modernization, with an emphasis on technology, simulation, artificial intelligence, gender equity, and well-being in medical education.

Conclusions: Inequalities in access to publication persist, related to economic and language barriers. It is recommended to strengthen the visibility of regional journals and promote inclusive editorial policies that expand geographical, linguistic, and epistemological diversity in global medical education.
