Development of the Diagnostic Imaging Skill of Chest Radiography in Medical Students
Abstract
Introduction: The image diagnosis of the chest X-ray is a fundamental skill for doctors.
Objective: To describe the status of the formation of the image diagnosis skill of the chest X-ray in students of Community Integral Medicine.
Methods: Descriptive study carried out at the University of Health Sciences, Venezuela. Sixty-four sixth-year students of the career participated. A survey was applied and a performance test was carried out using a rubric with nine indicators. The scale used was: average ≥ 2,5, Well prepared; between 1,5 and 2,4, Partially prepared and < 1,5, Poorly prepared, to measure the general mastery by indicator and the variable Preparation in the skill.
Results: More than half declared to be poorly prepared and the most affected indicator was Correct execution of the image diagnosis (82,8 %). Everyone expressed complete agreement with the importance of mastering the steps for performing imaging diagnosis; 92,2 % acknowledged being completely in agreement with the need to prepare, and 79.7% stated they were completely disagreeing with having received preparation. In the performance test, the majority (60,9 %) were at the Partially prepared level. No indicator reached averages that suggested that the students were Well prepared.
Conclusions: The students considered the professional usefulness of the radiological diagnostic skill of the chest X-ray and recognized dissatisfactions and deficiencies in their training; this latter aspect was confirmed by the performance test.
