Between Teaching and the Pressure to Publish: Ethical, Pedagogical, and Human Tensions in Health Research

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: In higher education, particularly in the health sciences, the relationship between teaching and research has been affected by an evaluation culture focused on scientific productivity. This model has generated tensions that influence teaching practice, student training, and the ethical purpose of university research.

Objective: To analyze the ethical, pedagogical, and human tensions arising from the pressure to publish in the field of health education.

Development: Institutional demands for measurable results have transformed the role of the teacher-researcher, prioritizing the number of publications over the quality of the educational process. This dynamic has fostered repetitive practices, institutional inequalities, and sustained teacher fatigue. It has also weakened the formative and social value of research, reducing its ability to promote critical thinking and ethical understanding of scientific knowledge among students.

Conclusions: Addressing this problem requires balancing quantitative indicators with qualitative criteria that recognize the social relevance, academic integrity, and humanistic dimension of research. Restoring its ethical and pedagogical meaning will strengthen teaching and dignify university work.
