Badge System to Motivate the Development of Information Skills in Online Training

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: The trend toward online and distance learning continues to grow in tandem with technological developments in the web and artificial intelligence. The use of platforms such as Moodle is widespread in academic centers; however, some students and teachers still reject it because it requires autonomy, discipline, and new technological skills. Methods and incentives are therefore needed to encourage its use and self-learning. To this end, badges can be used as reward systems to stimulate learning. These are used in individual and group assessments, which show the student's progressive progress in a creative way. This encourages the adoption of a mode of action in this virtual modality.

Objective: To design a digital badge system aimed at developing information skills, based on practical experiences applied in postgraduate courses.

Methods: The system was developed at the José Antonio Echeverría Technological University of Havana. The sample consisted of 24 graduate students from a distance learning course in 2024. Theoretical methods such as analytical-synthetic, modeling, and functional structural systems were used, as well as empirical methods such as documentary analysis, observation, and the systematization of experiences.

Results: The system consists of 76 badges, distributed across six information skills at three levels of development. Each badge corresponds to the student's progressive advancement through the practical implementation of the skills' actions and operations.

Conclusions: The badge system is presented as an effective tool for motivating the development of information skills in graduate students. This promotes autonomy, discipline, and active participation, which are fundamental in distance education.
