On the Development of Information Literacy Skills in Family Medicine Residents

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Information literacy has become an essential component in the training of professionals, teachers, and researchers. This ongoing learning process integrates information, knowledge, and intelligence, and forms the basis for developing information skills aimed at fostering an active, reflective, and critical relationship between people and information. The lack of systematic training during medical residency can lead to reliance on fragmented knowledge and limit the ability to respond to emerging scientific and technological challenges.

Objective: Analyze the elements involved in the development of information literacy skills in Family Medicine residents.

Authors' position: Strengthening the curriculum for human capital is the cornerstone of institutional transformation. Comprehensive training plans are needed that address real needs and enable professionals to successfully navigate technological advancements, valuing educational quality and professional performance as strategic components. The goal is to train professionals capable of developing advanced competencies, focused on identifying and prioritizing relevant information for clinical and academic decision-making.

Conclusions: Information literacy training for residents faces limitations stemming from multiple causes. It is believed that incorporating a multidimensional, innovative, and constructive approach into medical residency programs, one that fosters autonomous and collaborative learning, can substantially contribute to the development of these competencies.
