New Ways of Thinking and Practicing University Teaching in a World with Artificial Intelligence

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: The expansion of artificial intelligence in higher education is reshaping the educational paradigm by introducing personalized learning environments, dynamic assessments, and expanded access to real-time information, forcing a rethinking of traditional educational objectives. This technological disruption opens opportunities to build more inclusive and adaptive learning experiences, but it also strains the human element of education by highlighting risks of dehumanization, digital divides, and algorithmic biases, especially in Latin American countries.

Objective: To show how artificial intelligence poses not just a change in teaching practice, but in the way of thinking at an academic level.

Author's Position: Artificial intelligence is conceived as an unavoidable agent of change that must be strategically integrated into the university but always subordinate to humanistic educational goals. The current role of the teacher should not be reduced or replaced by artificial intelligence, but rather redefined as that of an ethical mediator, designer of learning experiences, and guarantor of responsible governance of data and algorithms in university education.

Conclusions: Artificial intelligence offers higher education a historic opportunity to shift from a content-centric model to one focused on developing complex cognitive skills, socio-emotional competencies, and ethical criteria for decision-making in interdisciplinary contexts. To harness this potential without sacrificing the human dimension of education, clear institutional policies, ongoing teacher training, robust infrastructure, and ethical frameworks that ensure equitable access, algorithmic transparency, and the centrality of pedagogical support are required.
