Abstract

Introduction: A key factor in teaching or being taught is motivation. Achieving it requires the use of a methodology that differs from the traditional one, and in this regard, the use of film as a teaching medium has much to offer.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of using film as a teaching resource to foster academic motivation toward the Philosophy course.

Methods: A quasi-experimental, pedagogical study utilizing the empirical techniques “Asking about expectations” and the composition “Philosophy Class: What I Took Away from It,” along with temporal data triangulation to compare information collected at the beginning and end of the teaching period. The study was conducted from September to December 2025. Seven films were used, and 69 first-year students in the Dentistry program participated.

Results: “Asking about expectations” revealed low engagement with the subject. Extrinsic motivational goals predominated, along with language focused on abstract content without evidence of practical utility in life. The analysis revealed significant aspects such as personal connection and motivational transformation, as well as recognition and perceived effectiveness of the methodology used; in both, there was recognition of the use of film as a teaching medium. There were no expressions of dissatisfaction in any of the responses. Triangulation revealed a transformation in academic motivation. Film was highlighted as an emotional and intellectual bridge.

Conclusions: The study confirmed the impact of film as a teaching resource in the Philosophy classroom to enhance academic motivation among students, due to its ability to generate emotional connections, foster critical thinking, and promote cognitive and affective engagement with philosophical content.
