Faculty Mobility and Internationalization, Academic and Scientific Cooperation as a Driving Force for Transformation in Medical Education

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Faculty mobility is defined as the physical or virtual movement of faculty members between institutions for the purposes of teaching, research, and cooperation. It constitutes a key strategy for internationalizing the curriculum and strengthening pedagogical and research competencies in medical education. In April 2025, the faculty mobility experience between the Universidad San Gregorio de Portoviejo (Ecuador) and the Universidad Privada Domingo Savio (Bolivia) was explored.

Objective: To analyze the experience between both universities as a potential catalyst for the internationalization of the curriculum, the strengthening of pedagogical and research competencies, and the consolidation of academic cooperation networks.

Methods: A descriptive, exploratory, and non-experimental study was conducted, employing a quantitative approach and action research methodology. The Ecuadorian faculty member actively participated with her Bolivian peers in training activities, the application of active methodologies, and the design of inter-institutional projects. Participant observation and semi-structured interviews with ten involved students were used.

Results: Four inter-institutional projects were structured in the areas of public health, diabetes mellitus, human papillomavirus, and breast cancer, with defined instruments and methodology. The exchange of active methodologies (clinical simulation, structured objective clinical examination, and mirror class) promoted the adoption of innovative teaching practices. Students reported highly positive perceptions, increased motivation, and interest in new mobility initiatives and joint research.

Conclusions: Faculty mobility consolidated networks of academic and scientific cooperation and strengthened pedagogical and intercultural competencies, laying the groundwork for the implementation and comparative analysis of joint projects. Its transformative potential in medical education was demonstrated.
