Impact of Basic Textbooks on Dentistry Students
Abstract
Introduction: Textbooks, like any human work, are perfectible; their evaluation must follow a methodology that involves both professors and students.
Objective: To evaluate the impact of basic second-year textbooks on students in the Dentistry program.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry in Havana. The universe consisted of 71 third-year students, with a sample of 43, to whom a survey was applied to collect their perceptions regarding frequency of use, content evaluation, didactic design, practical utility, and impact on learning.
Results: 38.1% reported using the textbook daily, 57.2% agreed that the books cover the necessary topics, and only 33.2% perceived the information as updated. Regarding the presence of tasks, 57.1% disagreed, and when assessing the overall impact of the textbooks, only 7% considered it maximum.
Conclusions: With respect to design, the majority of opinions are positive in terms of structure and language, although perceptions are more divided on the usefulness of images, diagrams, and schematics. The absence of tasks that facilitate student self-assessment stands out as the main weakness.
