Abstract

Introduction: The professional development process is permanent and continuous; it demands effort, discipline, and responsibility from each individual in order to achieve the desired impact in a conscious and self-determined manner. Postgraduate education faces challenges spanning the healthcare, teaching, research, and management spheres, thus requiring greater professional teaching development. Among coloproctology specialists, this development is deficient in the scientific-research and teaching-healthcare dimensions, which affects resident training.

Objective: To characterize the current state of the professional teaching performance of coloproctology specialists at “Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso” General Hospital.

Author’s position: Through a critical-reflective study based on analysis and synthesis, as well as verification of the validity of the standpoints adopted as referents in professional development, a characterization of the current state of the professional teaching performance of coloproctology specialists was carried out. The results obtained from the analysis of instruments constructed through the operationalization of the single variable and methodological triangulation enabled the diagnosis of professional development problems affecting the professional teaching performance of coloproctology specialists at “Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso” General Hospital. These findings constitute the foundation for the design and implementation of a professional development strategy aimed at improving the professional teaching performance of these specialists.

Conclusions: Participation in research projects and methodological teaching activities is insufficient, knowledge of the regulatory documents governing the postgraduate teaching-learning process is limited, and the application of methodological resources in resident training is inadequate. The proposed professional development strategy possesses a scientific and methodological structure, with an interdisciplinary and praxeological approach; its implementation yielded a positive transformation in the professional teaching performance of coloproctology specialists, proving feasible for use in postgraduate specialty training settings.
