Use of Haptic Simulators in Dentistry Education

Abstract

Introduction: Haptic simulation in dentistry constitutes a high-fidelity technology capable of reproducing tactile sensations during simulated clinical procedures, thereby facilitating the teaching-learning process without risk to patients.

Objective: To analyze recent scientific evidence regarding the advantages, limitations, and impact of haptic simulators on the development of clinical and psychomotor skills in dental students.

Methodology: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Scopus and Web of Science databases were consulted for articles published between 2020 and 2025 in English and Spanish. The search strategy included terms related to haptic simulation and dental education. Of the 104 studies initially identified, 26 were selected after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Variables such as clinical performance, self-efficacy, technology acceptance, and implementation challenges were analyzed.

Results: Haptic simulators were associated with improvements in manual dexterity, coordination, clinical precision, self-efficacy, motivation, and confidence. Their use was reported in areas such as operative dentistry, endodontics, local anesthesia, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and orthodontics. However, limitations related to costs, maintenance, faculty training, curricular integration, standardization, and still limited evidence regarding transfer to real clinical performance were also identified.

Conclusions: Haptic simulators represent a promising educational resource to complement traditional dental teaching during preclinical stages. Their implementation requires institutional planning, pedagogical validation, and future studies assessing their effectiveness in Latin American contexts and in combination with extended reality technologies.
