Emotional Competencies and Academic Performance in Nursing Education

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: In Nursing education, the integration of scientific knowledge with emotional competencies is essential to strengthen the quality of the teaching-learning process, student motivation, and the educational climate.

Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence on the relationship between emotional competencies and academic performance in Nursing education.

Methods: A systematic review based on the PRISMA approach was conducted through a search of studies published between 2014 and 2025 in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Empirical studies and systematic reviews related to emotional competencies, emotional intelligence, and academic performance were included. The final sample consisted of 21 studies selected according to relevance and thematic quality criteria.

Results: The reviewed evidence shows that emotional competencies are positively associated with academic performance, as they strengthen motivation, self-regulation, empathy, interpersonal communication, and psychological well-being. Emotional intelligence was also identified as a protective factor against stress, anxiety, and burnout. However, several studies do not focus exclusively on Nursing, but rather on broader contexts of medical education and health sciences.

Conclusions: Emotional competencies favor the teaching-learning process and contribute to a more comprehensive education in Nursing. Nevertheless, there is a need for more specific studies in this field, particularly longitudinal research and educational interventions aimed at evaluating their direct impact on academic performance.
