Microcredentials in Higher Education: Bibliometric Analysis of Scientific Research

Abstract

Introduction: Microcredentials have emerged in higher education as a flexible alternative for competency certification, in response to labor market demands and lifelong learning. In recent years, this approach has generated increasing academic interest, making it necessary to systematize existing scientific production and identify its main research trends.

Objective: To analyze scientific production on microcredentials in higher education through a bibliometric study covering the period 2000-2025.

Methods: A descriptive bibliometric study was conducted. The universe consisted of scientific documents published on microcredentials in higher education. The sample included 142 documents retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, selected according to thematic relevance and bibliographic data availability. Data processing and analysis were performed using RStudio, Biblioshiny, and VOSviewer to examine indicators of productivity, citation, collaboration, and thematic co-occurrence.

Results: The findings revealed exponential growth in scientific production since 2016, in both publications and citations. Authors with a single publication predominated, and small production clusters were identified. The United States, Australia, and Malaysia led in the number of articles, while Canada and Germany stood out in terms of average citations per publication. Central themes included microcredentials and digital badges, with emerging trends related to learning analytics and workforce development. Limited scientific production from South America and the Caribbean was observed.

Conclusions: Microcredentials represent a flexible, competency-oriented response to labor market requirements and lifelong learning needs. However, significant regional gaps in scientific production persist, highlighting opportunities for further research and institutional strengthening in Latin American contexts, as well as the need to ensure quality assurance and integration within higher education systems.
