Health Literacy and Vocational Orientation for Admission to Health Careers in High School Students
Abstract
Introduction: In the preparation of high school students for admission to health-related careers, health literacy and vocational guidance are essential, although limitations still currently exist in both aspects.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between health literacy and vocational guidance as influential factors in the preparation of high school students for admission to health careers.
Methods: Research with a mixed-methods approach, descriptive and correlational, cross-sectional design. A total of 231 high school students from first to third year with an interest in health careers, 12 teachers, and five vocational counselors were surveyed using the Google Forms platform; additionally, 15 students, eight health professionals, and three counselors were interviewed. Quantitative analysis was performed using SPSS software and qualitative analysis with Atlas.ti.
Results: A high proportion of students (80.1 %) presented inadequate or problematic health literacy levels. Self-perceived deficits were evidenced in the interpretation of scientific data (40.7 % deficient) and health problem-solving (42.0 %), as well as deficient performance in resilience (33.8 %) and stress management (28.6 %). Vocational guidance was perceived as having insufficient relevance, systematicity, and quality. A direct relationship exists between health literacy level and vocational orientation.
Conclusions: Preparation for health careers is a multidimensional problem. Integrated strategies that articulate health literacy with systematic and contextualized vocational guidance processes are required.
