Abstract

Introduction: Peer tutoring has emerged as an effective strategy in medical education to improve students' academic performance. This study addresses the impact of peer tutoring on learning and knowledge retention, highlighting its purpose of identifying its benefits in the context of contemporary medical training.

Objective: To identify its benefits in the context of contemporary medical education.

Methods: A systematic review of studies published between 2020 and 2024 was conducted in databases such as PubMed and Scopus, using key terms related to peer tutoring and academic performance in medicine. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and the quality of the studies was assessed using CASP tools. The results were analyzed using narrative synthesis.

Results: The findings indicate that students who participate in mentoring obtain higher grades and show better knowledge retention compared to those who do not participate. Mentoring also contributes to reduced stress and greater satisfaction with the educational experience. In addition, the training of mentors and the appropriate size of mentoring groups are critical factors that enhance these results.

Conclusions: Peer tutoring is confirmed as a valuable component of medical education, improving both academic performance and students' emotional well-being. Despite challenges in its implementation, its potential to create a collaborative learning environment is significant. Future research should address virtual tutoring and diversity in groups to maximize these benefits.
