Abstract

Introduction: The development of master's degrees for health professionals is a crucial link in postgraduate training.

Objective: To identify factors determining the usefulness of conventional teaching activities in the Master's Degree in Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology.

Methods: A qualitative observational cross-sectional study was conducted. The universe consisted of 553 questionnaires collected during 99 teaching activities in the Master's Degree in Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology, in the period 2023-2024. General qualitative variables were used, such as the teacher's category and the activity schedule, as well as four evaluation variables, using questions with a Likert scale from 1 to 4.

Results: The analysis revealed maximum scores for: teacher preparation (92.4% of questionnaires), quality of audiovisual media (87.2%), and clarity of the teacher's explanation (92.6%). 86.4% of activities were rated as maximally useful. Logistic regression confirmed the probability of maximum usefulness if: optimal teacher preparation (20 times higher), optimal use of audiovisual media (12 times higher), and maximum clarity in explaining the topic (7 times higher). These aspects accounted for 56% of the result (R2 Nagelkerke = 56%). There was no significant relationship with the teacher's teaching category or schedule.

Conclusions: It is evident that the usefulness of teaching activities for master's students depends on the teacher's preparation and, in decreasing order, on the appropriate use of audiovisual media and clarity in explaining the content. These aspects are of interest for the improvement of master's programs.
