Formative Research in the Subject of Ophthalmology

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: It is important to develop the research aspect in the subject of Ophthalmology. There is a type of research that can be carried out during the development of the curriculum of any subject, called formative research. Its theoretical and methodological references need to be determined.

Objective: To determine the theoretical and methodological references related to formative research, its characteristics, principles, and ways of developing it in the Ophthalmology course.

Methods: A literature review was conducted on formative research. The search was carried out on the regional portal of the Virtual Health Library and on Google Scholar. The keywords “formative research,” “undergraduate research,” and “medical education” were used. Thirty articles were selected, and the following theoretical methods were used: historical-logical, analysis and synthesis, inductive-deductive, and documentary analysis, which allowed the information to be systematized.

Results: Formative research has been addressed by different authors. Aspects related to its definition, particularities, principles, and methods that facilitate it were specified.

Conclusions: The systematization identified national and foreign authors, which allowed us to identify regularities and define “formative research” in the subject of ophthalmology. There are few references regarding teachers' perceptions of the subject and professional pedagogical performance for formative research.
