Educational intervention, through practical tutoring, to improve academic performance in the subject of rheumatology

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Tutoring is an individualized methodological resource aimed at academic reinforcement for students. In the case of rheumatology, it is necessary to acquire practical skills for diagnosing rheumatic diseases.

Objective: To analyze the results of an educational intervention using practical tutoring to improve educational performance in medical students.

Methods: A quasi-experimental, applied research study was conducted with a design involving an educational intervention among seventh-semester medical students at the Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo, Ecuador, in the Internal Medicine II course, Rheumatology-Hematology Module. The sample consisted of 114 students, of whom 89 formed the research sample. General characteristics and academic performance variables were studied. McNemar's test and chi-square test were used to identify changes in student academic performance after the implementation of the educational intervention.

Results: The average age was 22.03 years, with a predominance of female students (68.54%). During the pre-test, students with average academic performance predominated (50.56%) and in the post-test, those with high academic performance predominated (49.44%).

Conclusions: The implementation of practical tutoring improved students' academic performance and consolidated their acquired theoretical knowledge. It also enhanced the acquisition of skills and abilities in the diagnosis and management of patients with rheumatic diseases.
