Abstract

Introduction: Health science undergraduate students are highly vulnerable to developing anxiety during their first academic semester, which is associated with impaired sleep quality and cognitive abilities such as theory of mind.

Objective: To examine the relationship between anxiety, sleep quality, and theory of mind in first-semester health science students.

Methods: Quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study with 208 students from medicine, psychology, and social work programs at a university in Barranquilla, Colombia. The Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and MASC (Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition) test were applied.

Results: Ninety-three percent of students presented anxiety (54% severe; 39% mild) and 66% were identified as poor sleepers. Significant differences were found between anxiety levels and sleep quality (p<0.05), as well as between anxiety and theory of mind. Students with mild anxiety showed a higher proportion of correct mentalization responses, whereas those with severe anxiety exhibited greater absence of mentalization.

Conclusions: Anxiety is associated with impaired sleep quality and difficulties in social cognition. These findings can guide strategies for early prevention and intervention in university mental health.
