Curricular Redesign and External Validation in University Medical Education

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: The Faculty of Medical Sciences at Universidad Bernardo O’Higgins implemented a comprehensive curricular redesign and external validation of graduate profiles to ensure the quality of training and its social relevance.

Objective: To evaluate the internal coherence and external relevance of graduate profiles and curricula of the Faculty’s four schools using qualitative and bibliometric assessment tools.

Methods: Mixed-methods, documentary, and analytical study. Curricular redesign and external validation reports were reviewed using the constructive alignment approach. Curricula, assessment strategies, and bibliographic references were analyzed, complemented by a bibliometric analysis to identify the alignment between academic output and educational competencies.

Results: All programs demonstrated strong internal coherence in the alignment of competencies, learning activities, and assessments. External relevance was reflected in the adoption of international standards and responsiveness to Chilean healthcare system demands. Gaps were identified in the integration of transversal competencies such as research, innovation, and internationalization, as well as opportunities to improve horizontal articulation across programs. Bibliographic references were robust in disciplinary content but less diverse in transversal and interprofessional approaches.

Conclusions: The study confirms significant advances in curricular quality and professional relevance but suggests strengthening transversal competencies, promoting interprofessional education, and diversifying the bibliographic base to consolidate a comprehensive and adaptable training.
