Abstract

Introduction: Suicidal behavior is a major public health concern. Given its relevance, the World Health Organization proposes, as a principle, the training of personnel at the primary healthcare level. In response to this, Cuba has developed, as a strategy, the emergence of the specialty of General Comprehensive (family) Medicine and the inclusion of this health problem in the study plan. In spite of this, it is evident that there are gaps in the training of family medicine specialists regarding the attention to this behavior.

Objective: To expose the importance of the professional improvement of specialists in general comprehensive family medicine to attend suicidal behavior.

Methods: An updated bibliographic review was carried out at Raúl Suárez Martínez polyclinic, of Rodas municipality, in Cienfuegos province, between January and February 2023. The resources available in Infomed, as well as the analytic-synthetic, inductive-deductive and historical-logical theoretical methods, were used. Thirty-two scientific articles were selected.

Results: Elements were exposed that address the importance of professional improvement of specialists in general comprehensive family medicine to address suicidal behavior.

Conclusions: Professional improvement is necessary for the achievement of an adequate performance by the specialist in general comprehensive family medicine, in order to integrate the promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of suicidal behavior, taking into account the social and cultural aspects in community development.
