Daily Evaluation in Geriatrics with a Person-Based Healthcare Approach

Introduction: The specialty of gerontology and geriatrics has, as its basic working tool, the comprehensive geriatric assessment. However, it is not functional for daily application. The evolution that is written in the clinical history and presented in the morning medical rounds should be a tool that speedily allows the assessment of positive or negative changes in the state of health.
Objective: To develop a methodological proposal for daily evaluation at the geriatric ward with a person-based teaching approach.
Development: It is a methodological proposal for the daily evaluation of the patient, with the purpose of developing, in daily life, a method focused on person-based care. It gives privilege to the individual development of learning through independent work and, later, with the presentation during morning medical rounds, as well as through team learning and work. The daily evaluation of the hospitalized elderly person is part of the work activity at the geriatric ward; therefore, it constitutes an education-at-work activity. The daily evaluation must take into account the comprehensive improvement of the person in the hospital.
Conclusions: The daily geriatric evaluation constitutes a step forward in the continuous improvement of care for the elderly person. It is the application of the clinical method with the singularities of elderly care and a person-based approach.
